Through the centuries, man has found innovative ways to harness the power of the sun — from magnifying glasses to steam engines. Converting solar power into electricity is also high on the political agenda in many countries, amid the push to find domestic energy sources that are less polluting than fossil fuels.
To simply put, solar energy is the radiant light and heat that reaches the earth. For centuries, solar energy has been harnessed by humans using a range of ever-evolving technologies. There are many solar energy technologies which include solar photovoltaics, solar thermal electricity and solar heating. Solar photovoltaic cells are made from silicon alloys. When the sun rays strike the surface of solar cells, electricity is produced. Solar cells can be grouped together to form a solar panel which are in great demand these days. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, more solar panels were installed in the third quarter of 2011 than in all of 2009 combined. Assisted by technological innovation, the cost of solar power has fallen sharply, so much so that the solar industry can sometimes deliver cleaner electricity at prices competitive with power made from fossil fuels.
Besides, sun rays can also be converted to heat energy. Like steam generators using thermal heaters to heat a fluid, such as water, sometimes convert even higher amounts of solar energy into electricity.
Solar energy could be of tremendous help to alleviate various problems. It reduces capacity problems on local utility systems. Furthermore, it decreases greenhouse gas emissions by curbing the electricity production by fossil-fuelled power plants.
